One Response to “Episode 21: Is Spiritual Discipline Legalistic?”

  1. 1. Patricia Backora Says:

The word “discipline” conjures up an image of spanking, or nuns beating themselves with whips to show how sorry they are for sin. Acts 15 has a list of just four things required of Christians besides walking in the Love of Christ, and they don’t include “spiritual disciplines” (a term found nowhere in scripture. These are: abstaining from fornication, meats offered to idols, things strangled and from blood. There are NO teachings in the post-Calvary apostles’ epistles to the churches commanding or even suggesting fasting, vigils, etc. as a means to get closer to God. The Word of God, as it applies to the New Covenant believer, should be our ONLY authority, not religious traditions which seem to be good but could rob the believer of their joy in Christ. Nowhere does any apostle command the Christian to go harsh on his body to prove his love for Jesus.
